In this intimate study, Ophelia is re-imagined, not as Shakespeare’s tragic heroine adrift in water, but adrift in her own interior world. Painted in a hard-edge, modernist language of flat color and cubist planes, this work is a departure from my usual impressionism and a nod to Picasso and Diebenkorn. This is not a portrait of despair. It is a portrait of the pause before surrender. Her closed eyes, her heavy makeup, the cigarette - these are evidence of a life being lived, and of the weight we all carry in quiet moments.
